Stealing the inheritance
Matthew 21
33 Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. 35 The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said.
38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
40 Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41 He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

We are trying to steal the inheritance and most of us don’t even know it. The side lining of Christianity in modern western society has led to the side lining of God in the western church. Sure we say all the right things in church and even do all the right things. An hour later however we are back out in the world, walking and talking the same way as the rest of it.
Woe betide to anyone who comes along and tries to tell us any different. If someone is not satisfied with us or our church, clearly that person is just a bad fit for the church or does not really understand it. It certainly could not be that our church is broken and needs to be fixed. The truth is no more welcome outside of our agenda now, than it was then.
Sure I know that this parable is speaking directly to the Israelites and how badly they bungled it. Speaking prophetically of the time when the Gentiles too would be included in God’s people. The question I have though is, have we the West not become the Israelites?
If we are not careful God will give his charge of furthering his Kingdom to others. The vineyard is not ours and we cannot steal it no matter how we fool ourselves. God is very clear on what happens to those who think otherwise. Are you giving God his share?
